I am responsible for the day-to-day running of five collection centres between Johnsonville and Waikanae, including Porirua, Waitangirua and Paraparaumu. I collect blood during our busy morning period then it’s off to my office to take care of the admin -- things like rosters, pay sheets, room checks, recording statistics, staff assessments, patient queries and so on.
Most rewarding part of your job
Being able to make a difference in someone's day by making their blood test easy and hassle free; and knowing that they are leaving happy and relieved that it wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be, especially the younger kids who can be genuinely frightened.
How do you most enjoy spending time outside work
I love to spend time with my wife, kids and dogs. The river, local tracks and forestry are where you'll find us in the summer. If the weather is rubbish, I'm not averse to watching a bit of TV.
If you are of large build (like I am) and you've tried every diet going with no success then consider Bariatric Surgery (Lap Band or Bypass). I have had a Lap Band and it has genuinely improved my quality of life and benefits my entire family. I am happy to discuss my experiences with people who would like to know more.
Something your colleagues may not know about you
I have been working with a volunteer organisation called Central Search Dogs and hope to start training my own dog in early 2012. We always need people to play the part of 'lost people' ... any volunteers?
